His career has never followed a single track.

Mathieu Bergeron is a business attorney, entrepreneur and executive based in the United States, with more than two decades of experience working at the intersection of business, law, management and entrepreneurship.

He holds an LL.B. in Civil Law and a J.D. in Common Law, giving him a legal background that bridges two distinct legal traditions. He has been admitted to the bars of both Québec and Ontario, and his legal credentials have also been recognized for eligibility to sit for the New York and California bar examinations, which he intends to pursue in 2027.

He began his legal career at Stikeman Elliott, one of Canada’s leading business law firms, where he was introduced early in his career to sophisticated corporate and commercial matters.

Fluent in English, French and Spanish, he has built a professional career spanning multiple jurisdictions, industries and business environments.

While law provided the foundation of his professional life, much of his career has extended well beyond traditional legal practice. His experience has involved building and managing organizations, solving operational and strategic problems, evaluating investments and business opportunities, leading complex transactions, and developing ventures across very different industries.

He has always been particularly interested in situations where the obvious solution is not necessarily the best one.

Thinking Across Disciplines

Complex problems rarely belong to a single field.

A legal problem may ultimately be a business problem. A financial problem may require an operational solution. A technical limitation may become an entrepreneurial opportunity.

His approach is therefore deliberately multidisciplinary. He tends to examine problems from several angles at once — legal, financial, operational, technological and strategic — looking for solutions that may not be apparent when each discipline is considered separately.

This crossover between Civil Law and Common Law — and, more broadly, between law, business, management, finance and entrepreneurship — has become a defining feature of his professional approach.

Rather than approaching a problem exclusively through the lens of his legal background, he is particularly interested in understanding the underlying economics, operational realities and strategic opportunities surrounding it.

That way of thinking has shaped both his legal career and his entrepreneurial activities.

Why is it done this way?

Does it actually have to be?

Lawyer & Executive

Advising a business and actually having responsibility for one are two very different things.

He has practiced law since 2005, primarily in business-related matters, while simultaneously spending more than twenty years in senior management within the private education sector.

He has been involved not only in advising organizations, but also in operating them: management, governance, human resources, regulatory matters, negotiations, infrastructure, growth initiatives and difficult strategic decisions.

Throughout his career, he has led and participated in significant financial and corporate transactions, including business acquisitions, mergers, corporate financings and other complex transactions undertaken both on his own behalf and for family-owned and other established businesses.

His experience has frequently placed him at the intersection of business and government. He has represented organizational interests and worked directly with government authorities, ministries, regulators and other public institutions on complex regulatory, administrative and strategic matters.

He has spent much of his career doing both.

International & Immigration Experience

A professional perspective that is inherently international and cross-border.

His professional activities have also extended internationally. With extensive experience in immigration matters and international mobility, he has developed and overseen activities connecting businesses, educational institutions and individuals across borders.

His international operations have included offices abroad providing student recruitment, visa and immigration-related services and connecting international candidates with Canadian educational institutions.

He is the owner of StudyCanada.ca, a longstanding international education platform dedicated to students considering Canada as a study destination. Established as a comprehensive online resource for Canadian education, StudyCanada.ca has developed significant international reach and has served students and educational institutions around the world.

His involvement in international education also included ownership and leadership of the Canadian Education Centre Network (CEC Network), an international organization that, at its height, operated through a network of 17 offices and sub-offices around the world.

Through the network, he oversaw international operations involving student recruitment, institutional representation, education marketing, international partnerships, visa and immigration-related services, and relationships between Canadian educational institutions and prospective students abroad.

Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship has always been a parallel part of his professional life.

He is constantly exploring businesses, technologies, investments and ideas that can be transformed into scalable ventures.

His interests have crossed a wide range of fields, including real estate, technology, artificial intelligence, advanced computing concepts, digital commerce, manufacturing, education and other emerging business models.

He is particularly attracted to opportunities where technology, capital or a different business model can dramatically change the economics of an existing industry — making something faster, simpler, more efficient, less expensive or possible at a scale that previously did not make economic sense.

Some ideas become businesses. Some become investments. Some remain experiments. Others lead to entirely different opportunities.

But the process is generally the same: understand the problem deeply, challenge the assumptions surrounding it, and determine whether there is a better way to solve it.

For him, entrepreneurship is therefore less about belonging to a particular industry than about recognizing opportunities across industries.

A Different Way of Looking at Problems

He does not believe innovation necessarily begins with inventing something entirely new. Very often, it comes from connecting things that already exist in ways that others have not considered.

Individually, these are separate disciplines. In the real world, they constantly interact. It is at those intersections that he finds some of the most interesting problems — and often some of the most interesting opportunities.

Those questions have led him toward some of the most interesting projects, investments and business concepts he has explored. They also reflect a broader philosophy: conventional solutions are valuable when they work, but convention alone is rarely a sufficient reason to stop looking for a better one.

Business, Technology & Opportunity

Technology is rarely interesting simply because it is new. The more important question is what it makes possible.

His entrepreneurial interests are intentionally broad. Rather than defining himself around a single sector, he is interested in businesses and technologies where there is an identifiable problem, a meaningful market and an opportunity to create value through a different approach.

This can mean acquiring or improving an existing business, developing a new concept, applying technology to an established industry, rethinking an inefficient process, or bringing together expertise from disciplines that do not traditionally interact.

Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies have expanded those possibilities considerably.

Can it reduce costs? Can it remove an existing limitation? Can it transform the economics of a product or service? Can it make something scalable that previously was not? Can an existing technology be applied in a completely different context?

Those questions increasingly influence the businesses, technologies and investment opportunities he chooses to explore.

He is interested in building things.

Building From the United States

Today, he is based in the United States while maintaining strong professional and business connections internationally.

His legal background in both Civil Law and Common Law, combined with decades of business, transactional and management experience, has naturally produced a cross-border and multidisciplinary perspective.

He continues to explore and develop projects across multiple industries, with particular interest in scalable businesses, emerging technologies, real estate, investment opportunities and unconventional applications of existing technologies.

He is not trying to build a career around a single industry.

Businesses. Investments. Technologies. Ideas.

And he remains convinced that some of the most interesting opportunities appear when people are willing to look beyond the traditional boundaries of their own profession or industry.

Always Open to Interesting Ideas

Not every conversation needs to begin with a transaction.

He remains interested in meeting entrepreneurs, investors, engineers, researchers, operators and other people working on ambitious, difficult or unusual problems.

Sometimes those conversations lead to businesses. Sometimes they lead to investments, partnerships or new ideas. And sometimes they simply bring together people who look at problems differently.

For him, that is often where interesting opportunities begin.

Contact

Interesting ideas start with a conversation.

Whether it involves a business opportunity, an investment, a technology, an unconventional idea or simply a problem worth discussing, he is always open to hearing from interesting people working on interesting things.
